Science

Science is all about making sense of the physical world around us so that we can make predictions.

Scientists constantly ask questions, collect and analyse data which they use to develop rules and test ideas. Science is constantly developing as we find out more.

The fundamental branches of science are Biology (the study of living things), Chemistry (how matter behaves and interacts to form new substances) and Physics (how energy, matter, time and forces interact).

At Harris Lowe we believe that science is a practical subject; we try to give student the opportunity to explore sciences through practical work in lessons. We want students to ask great questions such as: Why are plants green? Why do burning things give out heat? What’s inside an atom?

Students starting in Year 7 will be able to describe many scientific ideas and phenomena. At Key Stage 3 the science curriculum will build on what students learned at primary school and there will be a greater emphasis on explaining and understanding.

Students develop their understanding through Key Stage 4 and can specialise in any of the sciences in our Sixth Form. All of our Key Stage 5 teachers are graduates of the discipline they teach which provides students with the best possible preparation for university or careers in science.

Students from our science department have gained places at top universities to study subjects such as medicine, engineering, dentistry and many other science degrees and careers.
