Student Voice

Student voice at the Academy focuses on fostering inclusion, well-being and academic success by actively incorporating student feedback.

The Academy has an active Student Council and student leadership roles aimed at promoting student engagement and improving Academy life. The Academy integrates student feedback into our policies and decision making.

The Student Council has recently contributed to:

  • The Academy’s policy towards mobile phones
  • The Academy’s Rewards Policy
  • The design of student spaces, including the library, outside areas and the canteen
  • Measures to make the Academy a more sustainable and environmental organisation
  • Curriculum feedback
  • Initiatives, including our ‘Artist in Residence’ programme

The Academy regularly gathers feedback from our students, such as through transition surveys at the beginning and end of each key stage.

Student voice, therefore, is a powerful asset, which contributes greatly to the cohesive nature of our Academy.

“Two years ago, I moved far away, but I couldn’t leave HLAW. Even with a long daily journey, the bond I have with the staff and community kept me here. Staying has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

“Harris Lowe has been fantastic in helping me through the move from Year 9 to Year 10. Staff help every student remove barriers to learning and they role model our values of integrity and empathy.”

“HLAW is welcoming and offers a wide range of subjects. I’ve made friends and feel I belong, especially through Drama Club, which has boosted my confidence speaking to students and adults.”

“The teachers here are really experts in their field. I want to either do a degree apprenticeship or go to university and I know the school will support me in whichever decision I make.”

“I’m really proud of where I am today. Being a part of Student Parliament helps me boost my confidence. Student voice is something the teachers really focus on at this school.”
