Transition in HLAW Sixth Form
Transition
At HLAW Sixth Form, we are committed to ensuring that every student is fully supported throughout their transition into Sixth Form and from Year 12 into Year 13. We believe that successful transition is rooted in both academic and pastoral support and begins as soon as you accept your place with us.
As part of joining HLAW Sixth Form, you will take part in a personalised enrolment and guidance process, ensuring that you are on the right courses to achieve your future goals. Our experienced staff will support you in making informed decisions about your study programme and help you prepare for the challenges and opportunities of Level 3 study.
Before you begin Year 12, you will benefit from induction activities and transition events designed to help you become familiar with life at HLAW. During your first weeks with us, our tutor programme and pastoral support structures will help you settle in quickly, build confidence, and feel part of our ambitious and supportive community.
Our commitment to academic excellence is underpinned by expert teaching, high expectations, and a culture that reflects our values of determination, integrity, curiosity, and empathy. We provide subject-specific transition materials and ongoing academic support to ensure that students make a strong start and continue to thrive throughout their Sixth Form journey.
Throughout your time at HLAW, your progress will be monitored carefully through regular assessment and feedback. Students receive clear guidance on how to improve and achieve their full potential. Where additional support is required, tailored intervention programmes ensure that every student is able to progress successfully and confidently into Year 13 and beyond.
Transition Work
We provide transition materials for students joining HLAW Sixth Form from Year 11, as well as for students progressing from Year 12 to Year 13. These have been carefully designed by our subject specialists to consolidate prior learning, develop key knowledge and skills, and prepare students for the demands of the next stage of their studies.
If You Are About to Join Year 12
Preparing for Sixth Form study is an important part of ensuring success in your chosen subjects. Before September, you will be provided with transition tasks for each of your subjects. These activities are designed to introduce key concepts, develop independent learning habits, and help you make a confident start to your courses.
We recommend spending several hours on each subject's transition work over the summer. You may choose to complete this gradually, perhaps setting aside an hour each day, allowing you to engage thoughtfully with the material. Your teachers will review this work during the first full week of term, so completing it to a high standard will help you hit the ground running from your very first lessons.
The transition work may include reading tasks, research activities, skills development exercises, and opportunities to revisit important GCSE content that will underpin your Sixth Form studies.

Transition from Year 12 to Year 13
The summer between Year 12 and Year 13 is a pivotal stage in your Sixth Form journey. By this point, you will have completed much of your course content and will be preparing for the final year of study that leads directly to examinations, university applications, apprenticeships, employment, and other post-18 pathways.
Using the summer effectively to review Year 12 content, create revision materials, practise examination questions, and complete preparatory reading for Year 13 will help you begin the new academic year in the strongest possible position. Some students may also need to complete coursework or Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) tasks during this period.
Your teachers will provide subject-specific transition activities, which should be completed by the first full week of term in September. Developing a structured approach to this work will not only strengthen your subject knowledge but also reinforce the independence and diligence that are essential for success in Year 13.
