Our Curriculum

This page explains the different pathways and courses available to students in 2026-27, including the courses offered in each pathway.

At HLAW Sixth Form, we offer a unique breadth of study programmes. Prior to starting, a rigorous application and admissions process guides students on to the most appropriate pathway to secure progression routes to high-quality higher education, employment or further technical training.

Our study programmes provide a wide and varied curriculum that can consist of academic, vocational or even a mixed study programme tailored to individual aspirations.

To support the taught curriculum, study programmes also contain a comprehensive programme of non-qualification activities designed to prepare students for the next stage of their education. These include supervised independent study, PSHE, assembly, preparation for UCAS, a careers and employability programme, and a range of extracurricular activities.

The academy also provides impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance.

A Levels

A Levels are highly academic qualifications for students who want to study at university. A Levels are largely assessed through external examinations and often include extended writing as non-examined assessment (coursework). We also offer the opportunity to study the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), similar to a university dissertation, in addition to three A Levels.

Applied General

Applied General qualifications are rigorous, advanced (Level 3) qualifications that allow 16 to 19 year old students to develop transferable knowledge and skills. They are for students who want to continue their education through applied learning and can lead to further study at university, apprenticeships or direct entry into the workplace. Level 3 Applied General courses are a blend of coursework and some externally assessed exams.

Combined Programme

As part of our broad and varied offer, students can choose to study a combination of A Level and Applied General courses. For example, students may choose a single Applied General qualification alongside two A Levels, or two Applied General qualifications alongside one A Level.

Course information

Course guides are viewable and downloadable from the bottom of this page. You can also find here a Curriculum Pathways and Subject Combinations guide that may be useful for you when considering which courses you wish to apply for.

We also offer the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) which is similar to a university dissertation. The EPQ is equivalent to an AS Level and accrues UCAS points. Applications for this qualification will be taken during the Autumn term of Year 12.
