Art
At HLAW, our Art and Design curriculum is built on the belief that creativity thrives when students are exposed to a rich variety of artistic disciplines, cultures and techniques.
What makes our subject special is our large team of dedicated specialist teachers, each bringing expertise across fine art, textiles, photography, ceramics, and more. This means every student receives high‑quality teaching across a broad spectrum of art forms, ensuring they discover new interests and develop confidence in multiple creative areas.
Our curriculum intentionally reflects the diversity within our school community: we study artists and designers from all over the world, celebrating a wide range of cultural perspectives and creative traditions. This global approach helps students understand how art connects people, places and identities.

In Year 7, students embark on three distinct projects designed to introduce foundational skills while encouraging personal expression and curiosity.
In Term 1, they explore the formal elements of art - leading to the creation of a ceramic sculpture inspired by everyday objects and the bold, playful aesthetics of Pop Art.
Term 2 focuses on textiles, where students study the vibrant work of Althea McNish and experiment with surface pattern, fabric design and printmaking techniques.
In Term 3, students move outdoors to take advantage of the brighter weather, studying landscapes through both European and Asian artistic traditions, culminating in work inspired by the atmospheric, dreamlike mixed media paintings of Crystal Liu. Together, these projects ensure that Year 7 is a dynamic, inspiring and enriching start to every student’s creative journey.
