Sociology
GCSE Sociology is the study of society – how it works, how it changes, and how it affects our everyday lives.
It is a fully examined course with no coursework. The subject encourages discussion and debate, helping you develop confidence in expressing and supporting your opinions.
You will explore important topics such as power and inequality, including differences based on social class, gender and ethnicity. You will study why people commit crime and how reliable crime statistics really are. You will also examine changes in family life, including different family types and shifting roles within the home. In education, you will investigate why some groups achieve more highly than others and why schools play such an important role in society.

You will learn about key sociological theories and how sociologists use research methods such as surveys, interviews and official statistics to study social issues.
Sociology helps you build valuable skills in essay writing, analysis, evaluation and communication. These skills support progression to A-Level Sociology and are highly valued in careers such as teaching, policing, journalism, social work and the Civil Service.
