Geography

Geography at our academy equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand the world’s people, places and environments.

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum explores topics such as natural hazards, glacial landscapes and dynamic development, through the lens of five ‘big ideas’: the key ideas which all geography students should understand by the end of KS3. These are not topics which are taught discretely, but are recurring themes embedded within the different topics throughout the course. Students need an understanding of each of these and the ability to apply them to different, increasingly abstract contexts to allow them to ‘think geographically’, while building critical thinking, data interpretation, and communication skills that are vital for life beyond school.

Our GCSE Geography curriculum allows students to build on their KS3 knowledge by developing and extending their knowledge of locations, place, environments and processes, as well as how all of these interact over space and time. Students will develop their map and maths skills alongside the use of investigate approaches to geography through fieldwork.

Geography links the humanities and sciences, supporting a range of GCSE options and career pathways. It is especially relevant in fields such as urban planning, environmental management, international development and sustainability, which is the fastest growing employment sector.
