Music
Music at our academy is about giving every student the chance to experience what it feels like to actually make music, not just learn about it.
From the very first lesson, students are playing, performing and creating together. What makes it special here is the focus on ensemble work and participation. Everyone gets involved, regardless of their starting point.
We build strong routines and high expectations, so lessons feel purposeful, but they’re also full of energy and creativity. Music becomes a space where students can gain confidence, work as a team, and feel proud of what they’ve achieved together. It’s often the lesson where students who struggle elsewhere really shine.
In Year 7, students build the foundations that they’ll use throughout Key Stage 3. They learn about pulse, rhythm and notation, and quickly start applying this knowledge on instruments such as the ukulele and keyboard. They explore the elements of music, instruments of the orchestra, and begin understanding how music is structured and performed.
The best part of Year 7 is seeing how quickly they progress. Many start with no experience, but within weeks they are playing chords, keeping a steady pulse and performing as a class ensemble. It’s a great year because students realise music is something they can do, not just listen to, and that sense of achievement is powerful.
