Design & Technology

Design and Technology offers a rich, practical curriculum where every student engages with the full design process – designing, making and evaluating-across all specialisms.

What makes D&T at our academy exceptional is the breadth of experiences students enjoy: every child rotates through Resistant Materials, Textiles, and Food Technology, ensuring they develop a wide range of creative, technical and problem-solving skills.

Our well‑equipped workshops, textile studio and food rooms allow students to learn in authentic environments and build confidence using real tools, materials and equipment. The curriculum is designed to encourage students to explore global design influences, sustainable thinking and culturally rich food traditions while building practical skills that will support them throughout life.

In Year 7, students take their first steps into each discipline through engaging, hands‑on projects.

In Resistant Materials, they learn essential workshop skills and apply them to designing and making a simple product, focusing on accuracy, safety and function.

In Textiles, students are introduced to e‑textiles, combining creativity with technology as they design and make a soft toy that incorporates a working electronic circuit. They also learn how to safely and confidently use a sewing machine, gaining vital construction skills.

In Food Technology, students explore the Eatwell Guide, food hygiene, and basic nutrition while developing core practical skills such as safe knife handling. Every other week, students cook a dish linked to their learning, steadily building independence and culinary confidence.

Together, these experiences make Year 7 D&T an exciting, journey where students discover how ideas become real, functional products through creativity and thoughtful design.
