At Harris Lowe Academy Willesden we use both booklets and a range of online learning platforms to support your child in their learning. Please see the tables below for information, and log on advice for each platform.

To support students with homework, the library is open with computer access every lunchtime, and Monday-Wednesday after school until 4pm. Here, students can ask for help with logging in, and can complete their homework in the library if they do not have access at home. The platforms can be accessed using a smartphone (out of school), tablet or laptop.

Homework booklets

We are pleased to introduce our new homework programme, which was successfully trialled with Year 7 students last year.  This new approach is designed to help students strengthen their knowledge, improve their reading and understanding skills, and make homework more consistent and manageable for families.

 

What your child will receive

Each student will be given:

• A homework booklet containing work for all subjects for Autumn Half Term 1.

• A plastic wallet to keep their homework booklet and timetable together.

How the homework programme works

The homework booklet is organised week by week to help students stay organised and on track.  Each subject follows the same three-step structure:

Section A: Retrieve: Students answer five questions based on topics they have learned previously. This helps them remember and strengthen key knowledge.

Section B: Learn: Students read a short passage linked to their current learning. They should look up and learn any unfamiliar words.

Section C: Understand: Students answer five questions to check their understanding of the information they have just read.

Students will also complete short quizzes in lessons each week, with a test taking place in Week 4.

Benefits of the new homework programme

This approach offers several advantages:

• Regular retrieval practice helps students remember important knowledge and supports learning in class.

• Reading and comprehension activities improve literacy skills and help increase reading confidence.

• Students are exposed to key subject vocabulary in meaningful contexts.

• Tasks are focused and manageable, reducing the amount of time needed to complete homework.

• Homework is closely linked to what students are learning in lessons, helping to reinforce classroom learning.

All homework should be completed in the homework booklet provided.

Rewards and consequences

To encourage students to complete homework to a high standard:

• Students will receive achievement points for each completed homework task.

• Incomplete homework will result in a 30-minute detention.

• Homework that has not been attempted will result in a 60-minute detention.
