Government & Politics

A-Level Government and Politics explores how power works in the UK and beyond.

If you are interested in current affairs, debating ideas and understanding how decisions are made, this is a great subject choice.

In the UK Politics component, you will study democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems and voting behaviour. You will also examine the UK Government, including Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Constitution.

In the Political Ideas component, you will explore key ideologies such as conservatism, liberalism and socialism, analysing how these ideas shape political debate. The Global Politics option allows you to study topics such as international organisations, global governance, human rights and the role of major powers such as the USA and China.

You will develop strong essay-writing skills, learn to evaluate different viewpoints and use evidence to support arguments. The course builds confidence in analysing news, interpreting data and constructing balanced judgments.

Government and Politics supports careers in law, journalism, public policy, international relations and the Civil Service. It also pairs well with History, Economics and Sociology. If you enjoy debate and want to understand how the world is governed, this subject is an excellent choice.
