Mathematics
At HLAW, we believe everyone can be a successful mathematician. Our Maths curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, grow confidence, and help students develop the resilience they need to solve problems – both in the classroom and in the real world.
We don’t just learn maths… we explore it, question it, play with it, and master it.
The Year 7 mathematics curriculum provides a strong foundation for students as they begin their mathematical journey. It introduces essential ideas across number, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and ratios. This balanced approach not only strengthens computational and problem-solving skills but also nurtures logical reasoning and real-world application.
In Year 7, the focus goes beyond simply recalling formulas. Students are guided to explore the reasoning behind mathematical methods, helping them understand why techniques work rather than just how to use them. This emphasis on developing a growth mindset lays the groundwork for tacking more advanced mathematical concepts in the years ahead.

What we aim for
Fluency that feels natural. We give students lots of varied practice so they truly understand the "why" behind the maths - – not just the "how." Over time, they tackle trickier challenges with speed, accuracy, and confidence.
Reasoning like a mathmagician. Students learn to spot patterns, make predictions, ask great questions, and explain their thinking using clear mathematical language. It’s all about turning ideas into discoveries.
️Problem‑solving superpowers. From puzzles to real‑world scenarios, students learn to break big problems into smaller steps, choose strategies, adapt when things get tough, and keep going until they find a solution.
What we learn: the four big strands
Number. Understanding numbers inside and out – fractions, decimals, percentages, and the core skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This is the foundation for everything else!
Algebra. Students represent unknowns, build expressions, solve equations, and start exploring the amazing world of mathematical proof. It’s like learning the language of patterns.
Geometry. Shapes, angles, symmetry, constructions – students learn how shapes work and how to use mathematical tools with accuracy. It’s maths… but also part art, part logic puzzle!
Data. We explore how data tells stories and helps us make decisions. Students learn how to collect information, represent it clearly, and analyse it thoughtfully.
