Modern Foreign Language
Learning a language at HLAW is an adventure that opens doors to the world and can lead you to new places and exciting experiences.
As pupils embark on learning either French or Spanish in Year 7, they will get stuck in to learning the language from the start, with a challenging and engaging curriculum that starts their preparations for the GCSE from the outset.
Yet, while academic success is at the heart of what we do, we go much further than that, with cultural insights into festivals and traditions from countries around the globe that speak the language and get a taste for what everyday life is like growing up and living in those countries.
We see how language learning can shape your future and enable our pupils to have exciting opportunities to work, communicate and explore the world using another language.
"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way." Frank Smith
Year 7 - On y va! ¡Vamós!
Our pupils start their language-learning journey at HLAW building on any knowledge they have brought from primary school, talking about themselves, their school life and their free time.
We practise using the present tense with an ever-increasing range of verbs and a variety of vocabulary that is taught in a way that both introduces new learning and reinforces prior learning in equal measure, to avoid overloading pupils.
The classroom is one where pupils hear and are encouraged to use the target language so that it feels like a useful skill that they can implement from the start of their course, and so feel more confident.
